Commemoration Day of King Father Norodom Sihanouk in Cambodia
King Father Commemoration Day in Cambodia
Every October 15, Cambodia slows down. King Father Commemoration Day is a public holiday, but nobody treats it like a festival. It is a day for wreaths, prayers, and quiet time with family.
Who Was the King Father, Norodom Sihanouk?
Few people shaped modern Cambodia as much as he did. He was born on October 31, 1922, and became king in April 1941. In 1953 he led Cambodia to full independence from France.
His life after that was far from simple. Here are the key moments:
- 1955: He stepped down in favor of his father and founded the Sangkum Reastr Niyum, a national development movement. He then became prime minister.
- 1960: He became head of state after his father died.
- 1970: A coup removed him from power while he was visiting the Soviet Union.
- 1975 to 1976: He briefly served as head of state under the Khmer Rouge, then resigned.
- 1991 to 1993: He returned to Cambodia and became king again in 1993.
- 2004: He stepped down for good because of his health. His son, King Norodom Sihamoni, took the throne.
He died in Beijing on October 15, 2012, about two weeks before his 90th birthday. That is why Cambodia remembers him on this date.
How Cambodia Said Goodbye
His funeral drew huge crowds. A long procession carried him from the Royal Palace to the Veal Meru crematorium site, and tens of thousands of people came out to mourn. About 3,500 monks prayed in front of the palace.
For the first anniversary, the government unveiled a bronze statue in Phnom Penh in October 2013. It stands in a public park just east of the Independence Monument. King Norodom Sihamoni and the prime minister opened it together.
What Happens on King Father Commemoration Day
Official ceremonies center on that statue. Delegations from the Senate, the National Assembly, the government, and other institutions lay wreaths there in the morning. Local and provincial authorities also hold religious ceremonies to pray for his soul.
The royal family marks the day privately. In 2024, King Norodom Sihamoni and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath led a Buddhist ceremony at the Silver Pagoda inside the Royal Palace.
Planning Around King Father Commemoration Day
Like other public holidays, government offices, banks, and schools close. The royal family has held a ceremony at the palace in past years, so check its opening hours before you visit.
Some people use the holiday to travel home to their province. Buses get busy around any public holiday, so book early. You can compare schedules and book your seat on BookMeBus.
The next royal date comes fast. October 29 is King Norodom Sihamoni’s Coronation Day, so it is worth booking that trip now too.
