Is Kuala Lumpur Safe to Travel? Honest Tips from Someone Who’s Been There

If you are planning a trip to Kuala Lumpur and wondering whether it is safe to travel there the short answer is yes, it is! I recently visited KL with my boyfriend and overall we felt very safe throughout the trip. That said, like any big city, there are a few things you should know before you go. Here is my honest experience and the tips I wish someone had told me before we left. 😊

  1. Our Experience Staying in Bukit Bintang 🏨
  2. Watch Out for Currency Exchange Scams 💸
  3. Getting Around Kuala Lumpur 🚆
  4. My Top Safety Tips for Kuala Lumpur ✅
  5. Final Thoughts 🌟

Our Experience Staying in Bukit Bintang 🏨

We stayed at WT Stay Swiss Garden Residence in Bukit Bintang and honestly it was one of the best decisions we made. The location is perfect you can walk to so many places without needing to take a Grab every time. Malls, restaurants, street food, convenience stores everything is right there.

The hotel itself also felt very secure. Every time we came in or out, we had to scan a QR code, which meant no random strangers could just walk in. That kind of security gave us a lot of peace of mind, especially at night. 🔒

Watch Out for Currency Exchange Scams 💸

This is something I really want to highlight because it happened to us. Not all money changers give the same rate and the difference can cost you a lot.

When my boyfriend exchanged money at Plaza Low Yat, the rate was great about 1 USD = almost 4 RM. But when he exchanged again at Suria KLCC, the rate was much worse. He ended up losing almost 20 USD on that one exchange. 😬

So please always check the rate before you hand over your money. Ask to see the rate on the board first, and if it looks off, walk away and find another exchanger. Money changers at Plaza Low Yat tend to have better rates than those inside big tourist malls.

Getting Around Kuala Lumpur 🚆

We used a mix of Grab, the MRT, and a lot of walking. Because we stayed in Bukit Bintang, we honestly walked most of the time the area is very walkable and well connected. The streets felt safe, well lit at night, and busy enough that you never feel alone.

When we did need a ride, Grab is the way to go. You can see the fare before you confirm, which means no surprise charges or haggling. Avoid random taxis that approach you always book through the app.

The MRT is also clean, affordable, and easy to use. If you are travelling further distances across the city, it is a great option.

My Top Safety Tips for Kuala Lumpur ✅

Based on our trip, here are the most important things to keep in mind:

  • 💰 Always check the exchange rate before changing money : Rates vary a lot between locations. Plaza Low Yat has some of the best rates in KL.
  • 📱 Use Grab for transport : You can see the price upfront and track your route much safer than hailing a random taxi.
  • 👜 Keep your valuables secure : Do not keep your phone or wallet in your back pocket, especially in crowded areas like markets and malls.
  • 🚗 Be careful when crossing the road : Vehicles drive on the left side in Malaysia it can be confusing if you are not used to it. Always use pedestrian crossings.
  • 🏨 Choose a hotel in a good location :Staying in Bukit Bintang meant we could walk almost everywhere and felt safe day and night.
  • 👗 Dress modestly when visiting mosques or religious sites :Remove your shoes where required and be respectful of local culture.
  • 💧 Stay hydrated : KL is hot and humid carry a water bottle with you and drink regularly.
  • 📶 Get a local SIM card or eSIM : Having data means you can use Google Maps, book Grab rides, and stay connected easily.
  • 💵 Do not carry too much cash : Only bring what you need for the day. Keep your passport and extra money locked safely in your room.
  • 🚫 Watch out for scams : Avoid strangers offering unofficial currency exchange or suspiciously cheap tickets.

Final Thoughts 🌟

Kuala Lumpur is a vibrant, exciting city and we absolutely loved our time there. We never felt unsafe but like any destination, a little awareness goes a long way. The currency exchange lesson cost us money we did not need to lose, so please learn from our experience! 😅

If you are planning a trip to KL, I really hope these tips help you have a safe, smooth, and unforgettable experience. It is a city worth every moment.
